My question is can I stain over the top of the existing stain and what preparation would it need ? The trim and walls have been painted, new wood blinds, furniture, and lamps added. The black stained side table and rug are the only elements that were existing.

I even had a little leftover for touchups. Where I've seen it used is for leveling the top of a table that's being planed or scraped flat. I'm a lifelong woodworker/chemist but have no experience with black stain, and your website answered all my questions. Congratulations on a well designed scientific-type of experiment that was well documented and easy to understand. Much better than most of the one-off anecdotes posted by users. Allows one to draw their own conclusions about the result one is trying to achieve. I selected the General Finishes stain for my red oak project.

In the outdoors, mold is a helpful organism that helps breakdown dead material. However, you don’t want mold in your home! Mould can live on any living organism and reproduces through spores that can be transported by air, water, or even insects. When the right conditions are present, these spores allow mold to grow. Not only is black mold unsightly and potentially damaging to wood surfaces, it can also cause health problems for those sensitive to allergens. Gray wood stains are a great option if you want color and possibly cool tones added to your wood but you don’t want it as severe as black.

I was really surprised by how dark and even all the poplar wood samples turned out! I love poplar for painted furniture builds, since it has tight grain that takes paint well. Apparently the same applies to black wood stain! You really can't go wrong with any of these colors. And, it dries very quickly, in about 3 hours you’re piece will be dried and ready!

It sounds like there are at least 4 or 5 different techniques for getting a black finish while keeping the grain visible. I stumbled across it just before I was going to finish our oak front door with Minwax Ebony (oil-based) stain. Apply and rinse as directed, then do a light sanding to remove the fuzzies and any finish/stripper left in the crevices. I want to change a light-honey colored oak headboard and foot board to a "blackish" color. I never have more than one day off in a row so I need to do as much as possible in a single day. I googles "india ink" and read it is also called "lampblack." I am not sure if you get the same results with the product recommended by Stocky.

I was wondering if the black stain will work on the cherry finish. I got a few estimates to have someone do it for me, but they wanted 1500 to 3000 for each piece. If you do decide to try, it does take time to cure… about two weeks.

This needs to be done in the next month. We were advised to have the cabinets done before the floor is refinished. Lastly I will change my cabinet hardware.
