Hilde Thunem, in her article on the reconstruction of the apron-dress from Køstrup notes the presence of seams in the smokkr and these seams suggest a shaped garment. Thunem proposes at that seams would have run down the entire length of the garment while noting the small size of the fragment makes it difficult to know the exact length. These seams suggest that the apron-dress was not a simple tube, but rather a shaped garment. The Køstrup apron-dress has a pleated section in front. It was dyed blue and was my inspiration for one of the outfits for tomorrow’s paper doll. Before we get into the part of Viking dress, let me pause a moment to say something I didn’t know until I started doing this research.
Many of our Medieval and Renaissance clothes are made from fine materials, such as cotton velveteen, cotton twill, satin, and silk, to showcase a luxurious look fit for ladies of wealth and status. We also have less elaborate garments made from common fabrics, like lightweight cotton and cotton canvas, for historically accurate costumes. Men’s medieval clothing consisted of the basics , such as tunics, doublets, clokes, robes, vests, baldrics, jerkins, sword belts, breeches, tights, hats, and pointed leather boots and shoes.

The apron-dress was likely a closed garment which may have been pleated at the front , may have not had pleating and may have had darts or seams for shaping. The length was either floor length, ankle length or shorter according to period illustrations . It seems equally possible that sometime more than one smokkr was worn, a shorter over a longer version.

Social standing and wealth played major roles in what men and women wore during the Middle Ages. Women of wealth and status wore floor-length dresses and tunics like peasant women, but the choice of material was very different. Wool – Sheep throughout Scandinavia were predominantly white, so the wool they produced was also white. At that time, shears were not in widespread use, so the Vikings tore the wool off the sheep by hand and combed it thoroughly to remove impurities and create long, soft fibers. The clothing that Norse women wore is reflective of their largely laborious and sometimes tedious lifestyle.
For those who could afford them, linen undergarments would have been far more comfortable than those made from wool. Trousers – Viking men wore button-less trousers held up by a belt, or in the case of peasants, by simple string or cord. Trousers were likely made from wool to be worn in the winter or linen to be worn during the year’s warmer months. Are you curious about what the Vikings looked like?
